I think you two would absolutely love the book “Surrounded By Enemies” by Bryce Zabel. It’s an alternate history that begins with JFK being saved from assassination in Dallas by a secret service agent, and follows the remainder of his presidency as it might have unfolded from that point. It’s very well-done, and the author definitely shares your viewpoint that JFK is far more mediocre and complicated than he’s usually remembered as.
